2008 SUPPORT FROM SCHOOLS
MONAHANS PUBLIC SCHOOLS have joined with Greater Works for a yearly food drive at Thanksgiving each year. Every classroom participates from kindergarten to high school. The Student Council holds a contest for each grade level results with our local PIZZA HUT rewarding students of the winning classroom with the most cans a personal pan pizza. More than 3,142 cans were collected worth $4,493. The Student Council also was able to help deliver the food directly to the homes of our clients on routes. On the following day a different group of stu co students came to assist by taking a 40 lb. box of food to the cars of our walk-in clients. 2008 Thanksgiving we served 418 families 16,720 lbs. of food.
ANGEL TREE Christmas initiative collects names of low-come students from school counselors. Four trees are placed in stores around the community with the Angel tags stating sizes of clothing and our local citizens buy excellent presents. Our PAL students from the high school wrap, sort and deliver the presents before Christmas Eve. This year we had about 135 names of students.
The PAL students also participate in the Christmas food distribution. They deliver 40lb. boxes of food to the clients on routes and to the walk-in clients on two different days. Christmas 2008 Greater Works served 328 families equaling 13,120 lbs. of food.
100,000+ lbs. were distributed in 2008
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING cooperates with a nation wide campaign to raise money to help local soup kitchens or food pantries. Student Council students goal is to collect a dollar from students in each classroom in our school district. The money is then donated to our food pantry. 2008 totals posted over $1,000.
