Ward County Works exists to relieve human suffering and assist with spiritual needs. We operate exclusively to receive and administer assets for charitable and educational purposes.
HISTORY
Greater Works was first created as Ward County Greater Works, Inc. in April, 2003. The Daughters of Charity proposed a grant in three states in three counties of each state to determine if the elderly Americans were able to connect with available services to assist in meeting their needs. Outreach persons surveyed the 60+ population of all income levels to determine if they needed assistance in finding agencies that provided services and how to apply for services. The grant ended March 2003 and Greater Works is a result of that grants revelation of needs unmet.
May 2004 Ward County Greater Works, Inc. received its 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) status with thirty families and today works supplying 300 families with a monthly food box designed to provide food for the last seven to ten days of the month. 13% of our clients are in need of special foods to meet their dietary needs. USDA's newest report on hunger in America finds that 12% of the US population do not have enough food. Ward County has a 10,800 estimated population and we served 2,100 people or 19% of our people.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Greater Works is the only food pantry in our county. We serve all seven towns in our county with a monthly box of 30 lbs of food, clothing and many other services. Our services are vast, meeting needs not addressed by any other single agency. Our biggest asset is our communities involvement in volunteering. People like to be able to help those in need but generally don't know how to do it in comfortable manner. We provide the outlet for our community to serve the less fortunate. In 2008 for all our Greater works, we recorded 26,400+ volunteer hours that came from county commissioners, public school students and teachers, service clubs, businesses, churches, community volunteers, vacationon bible schools and our own clients.
